As a traveller, out and about a lot, finding myself needing different footwear for different activities, I’m always on the lookout for versatile, comfortable footwear. A couple of years ago, sitting on the shelves at TK Max I spotted a pair of flip flops. The brand sounded familiar, Oakley, not for shoes, but something else. Then the penny dropped: of, course, Oakley sunglasses. This was Oakley’s Super Coil range of sandals, as I later learned.
These Oakley supercoils were dearer than I’d normally spend on a pair of slippers or sandals, but they looked so comfy… and they were as comfortable as they looked: I slipped them on and didn’t want to take them off again. They engulfed my feet with such comfort and security, fitting like a perfect glove. Little did I know, at the time, that I would be living 2 summers in these, walking, climbing, sailing and so much more.
That’s how I bought my first pair of Oakley Super Coils. This pair od sandals gradually became the only pair of shoes I wanted to wear as soon as the weather was warm enough.
My most favourite flip flops, ever!
The super soft footbed combined with an extremely robust sole, a wide sturdy band gripping the feet into the flip flop make this shoe not only comfortable but very supportive for the feet. They are quick to slip on, yet my feet wouldn’t slip out easily on different terrains.
The soft foamy footbed- insoles are a softer foam rubber- dries quickly when wet and also prevents foot odour. A strong consideration, when you are wearing a shoe day in and day out.
The soles of these sandals have proven to be remarkably strong: a heavy, but flexible rubber, coping with all sorts of terrain and hardly showing any wear and tear. There is a good bounce in them to slow fatigue of walking all day. The pattern gives the right amount of grip on slippery surfaces.
My feet were held so well into the slippers that I went hiking in them, when others wore hiking shoes or hiking sandals. Thanks to the combination of the soft footbed and the sturdy sole the Oakley Super coils gave good arch support. These flip flops really have been my go-to shoes for the past two years, whenever the weather allowed. I wore them daily during our 2 and half months of sailing the Baltic last summer. For two winters I have sported thick, Oakley super coil shaped tan lines to remind me of all the adventures we’ve had.
The colour- a neutral black and grey, made them fit with almost any outfit, be it something for a hike, a beach day or a bar for a cocktail in the evening.
The Oakley Super coils are a bit heavier than your regular flip flops, jandals or slippers. This is because of the quality rubbers the shoe is made from. Even when the weight of my hand luggage has been an issue, another clothing item or two have been sacrificed to give these the allowance.
The weak point of my favourite shoes, however, showed themselves this spring: the little bit of fabric that goes between the toes broke. I could feel a tear welling up when this happened. I’ve remained hopeful that there might be a shoe repair shop that can fix it… No luck so far.
I’m not giving up yet on getting them fixed, but I am also on the look at for a similar all-rounder flip flops to slip on quickly and explore the world in.
Furthermore, I am now on the look out for a similar pair of versatile, supportive flip- flops for the kids too, as I realise they do spend quite a bit of time in sandals and flip flops over the summer and their growing feet need good support.
