Here’s a fab competition for you and your family!
In the Inspireroo launch issue we featured family skiing. We explore some family-friendly resorts in France and have hints and tips for getting more for your budget, as well as answering some questions that arise before your first family ski trip.
If you are feeling the Brexit pinch and not actually going to the mountains this winter, or if you are looking to warm up the ski legs before going overseas for your ski holiday the UK has plenty of options for skiing and snowboarding.
The UK has some of its own natural ski slopes, which are fantastic when we do get the right conditions. However, it’s a safer bet to go with indoor ski slopes or dry slopes close to home. We asked the Ski Club of Great Britain whether they had some tips for Inspireroo readers:
For real snow, which really does give you the best chance to mimic what skiing in the mountains actually feels like, head to The Snow Centre in Hemel Hempstead, one of the main real snow slopes around the UK.
The Snow Centre has the longest training slope for beginners with a new magic carpet for easy access down the one side (no tricky drag lifts to cling on to) its main slope, at 160m is long enough to get the ski muscles working. There are beginner group sessions, ladies only sessions, kids holiday courses, ‘learn to ski in a day’ courses so a great way to get started or to work on technique.
The Snow Centre is open all year round and there is something for all the family:
These slopes are like a treadmill but for skiers and boarders. They give the legs an amazing work out as there is no rest for ski lifts. Each 15 minute session on these slopes are taken with instructors so the progress is quick and mirrors at the base of the slope give real time feedback. Great fun for kids to get their ski legs before a family holiday!
Not forgetting the many ‘dry ski slopes’ around the UK, which have been the start point for many of the UK’s best snowsport athletes. From Norfolk, to Gloucester to Hillend in Scotland, there are over 30 dry ski slopes around the UK. The slopes often run club race nights for children who want to take their skiing a bit more seriously. Beginners and those looking to improve their skiing or snowboarding level can find out more via Snowsport England’s ‘GoskiGoboard’ website.
